Baroque mansions and a long quiet promenade

Prcanj's signature is the line of grand captains' houses along the water and the enormous Birth of the Virgin church that dominates the village above the shore. The seafront promenade runs for a couple of kilometres, perfect for an evening walk, but the village is spread out, so a car turns it from a single quiet stop into a proper base for exploring the bay.

With a car, Prcanj is a relaxed base for the whole region. The serpentine road up to Lovcen and Cetinje is a morning loop over the mountain; Budva and the open-sea beaches are about 40 minutes once you are through the Vrmac tunnel; and the western bay around Herceg Novi is well under an hour along the shore. The quiet inner-bay roads here are some of the gentlest driving in the country for a first day at the wheel.

When to visit

Prcanj stays calm year-round, with none of the cruise-day crush that fills Kotor. Summer brings warm, swimmable water off the promenade and long light evenings; spring and autumn give you the clearest shore roads and the softest light on the mansions; and even in winter the seafront route stays open and easy, which is part of why this quiet shore suits an unhurried self-drive trip.
