Car Rental Insurance in Kotor

How the four cover tiers and the deposit work, what is and is not covered, and which tier suits a Bay of Kotor trip.

Every Kotor car rental booked through us is road-legal from the moment you drive away, because free Minimum third-party cover is included on every rental. From there you choose how much of the risk you want to carry yourself: three paid upgrades reduce the excess and, on the top tier, remove the refundable deposit entirely. You pick your tier at checkout, after you have seen the price for your exact dates.

What no tier covers

Some things sit outside every policy, basic or top tier. Treat these as your responsibility whichever cover you choose:

  • Interior damage, stains and odours (smoking, spills, pets)
  • Lost, damaged or locked-in keys
  • Filling the tank with the wrong fuel
  • Driving on unsealed tracks or off-road
  • Crossing a border without the agreed cross-border permit
  • Damage caused while over the drink-drive limit or by an undeclared driver
  • Traffic fines, tolls and parking penalties

Rental rules worth knowing

A few terms apply across the fleet, though they vary a little by car and supplier:

  • Driver age is typically 21 to 70; cars outside that range can be arranged on request
  • A minimum driving experience applies (often one to three years, depending on the car)
  • The car is supplied full and should be returned full
  • A second driver can be added free of charge, with their licence and passport on the agreement
  • Cross-border trips need a permit arranged before pickup; the Green Card is included on the upper tiers

Why cover matters on Kotor's roads

Kotor and the surrounding bay pack a lot of demanding driving into a small area. The Bay of Kotor ring road is narrow and slow behind summer coaches, the Lovcen and Cetinje serpentines stack up dozens of tight switchbacks, and the coastal car parks fill bumper to bumper in July and August. Add scooters weaving through the resort towns and the odd unlit mountain stretch, and small knocks are simply more likely here than on an open motorway.

That is the case for thinking about cover before you collect rather than at the desk. The lower tiers keep the daily rate down but leave you carrying the excess and a refundable deposit of around €100; Full Coverage Plus costs more per day but removes the excess and holds nothing on your card, which many drivers prefer for the peace of mind on the bay roads. Whichever you choose, the exact figures for your car and dates are shown in the booking step before you pay.

Insurance only holds if you stick to the agreement: keep to sealed roads, name every driver, arrange a permit before any border, and never drive over the limit. A claim outside those terms can be refused.

Insurance FAQ

Wondering what the deposit actually covers, whether you can avoid it altogether, or what happens if the car picks up a scratch on a narrow lane? These are the cover questions renters ask us most.

What insurance is included for free?

Every booking includes Minimum third-party liability cover, which meets the legal requirement to drive in Montenegro. Collision damage, glass and wheels are added through the paid upgrades.

Do I need a credit card for the deposit?

On most cars, no. A refundable deposit of around €100 applies on the lower tiers and can usually be left on a debit card or in cash. Full Coverage Plus removes the deposit entirely.

What is the excess?

The excess is the amount you would pay toward damage before cover kicks in. Basic carries a standard excess, Full Coverage reduces it, and Full Coverage Plus removes it so you pay nothing toward accident damage.

Can I add a second driver?

Yes, free of charge. The second driver must meet the same age and experience requirements and have their licence and passport added to the rental agreement at pickup.

Does my cover work across the border?

Driving into Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Albania or Kosovo needs a paid permit arranged before pickup, and the Green Card is included on the upper tiers. Crossing without the permit voids your cover.

Is Full Coverage Plus worth it?

For the narrow bay roads, the serpentines and tight summer parking, many drivers find the zero-excess, zero-deposit peace of mind worth the higher daily rate. On a short, low-mileage trip the lower tiers can be enough; the prices for both are shown at checkout.
